Google+

Google+ deleted the photos on this blog. I am working on getting them back, so bear with me...that is, if you still read this blog.

Thanks.

Do what you love.

"Sometimes it is hard to make money. Money is scarce sometimes. That's the way it is for those of us who just do what we love. We learn to adapt. We learn how far we can take it. We make compromises when we have to.

But the beautiful thing about it is, he knows what he loves. He knows what he values. And he is being true to himself. I wouldn't change that. It's hard doing what you love. It can wear you down and put lines in your face. You end up with a leathery neck and tattered jeans and scarred workbooks and callused hands. You end up weather-beaten. That is, you end up with the face that you deserve. Your face becomes the record of a life lived according to what you love.

There's something to be said for that."

I like to think that these are the guys I have photographed. I hope to become a person who does what she loves.

Columbus Day blues

Columbus killed the Native Americans and brought destruction to the West. Mr. Mills, a DC native, kills it in style and brings hope to the Hill. Male staffers take note: Be a little creative and surprising with a canvas boat shoe like the ones Mr. Mills sports and pair your blue blazer or sport coat with something other than khaki chinos, Ray Ban wayfarers, and tan Sperry's. (You all look the same to me!) Try some slim dark denim, grey denim, or green chinos like this. A little less country club clone, a little more cool, street sleek.

We spent the day taking pictures/video of the filming of Transformers 3 outside the National Museum of the American Indian; we probably should have spent Columbus Day inside the National Museum of the American Indian instead...DC is Hollywood for ugly people (and ugly clothes), after all.

Oxblood Oxfords

Last weekend my brother came to visit and I took him to the Sunday flea at Eastern Market. It's a good thing his feet were too big because I scored these men's Bostonian "Classics" cap-toe shoes for myself for a mere $7. It's surprising to me in how good of a condition they were in when I bought them - like they were hardly ever worn. (Perhaps they bit at the previous owner's feet too much? Now, another [wo]man's treasure....) I wore them on this grey, gloomy day with a black cardigan and scarf, knee-length trench coat, jeans and of course, my vintage Chanel bag. Fall fashion is in full swing.

Plea for help: Somebody stop me from buying oxfords. These are my third pair since November 2009 and they all look the same. I'm about to buy these leather and canvass brogues. I mean, how do you ignore that price?!?!?!

Style served in a scoop

Anyone who's had to wear a daily uniform for either work or school will understand the necessity to play up the otherwise drab and dull outfit by personalizing your look. Marlon, a multimedia and communications major at American University (and my favorite gelato-server at Pitango in Penn Quarter) adds some character to his black polo uniform with a grey, tweed driver's cap and fashion frames worthy of any signore's admiration.

When you want something done right...

The Hill is hopeless, so I took matters into my own hands and styled a friend. Wish I had stuck him in some desert boots or Red Wings, but overall I am pleased. The plaid shirt reminds me of Band of Outsiders SP10, and friend here can tie his own bow tie. He is an Oxford University graduate after all.

Credits: Charcoal twill Ludlow sportcoat; 484 slim-fit jean in raw selvedge denim; Secret Wash button-down shirt in Everett tartan; Black and white checked-cotton bow tie. All J.Crew. Sperry Top-Siders model's own.

Now when and how do I get to be Jack's assistant?
